Data-Driven solutions to power remote communities: SCOPE8 & Litro de Luz in action

BI tools tailored to improve the efficiency of complex processes helped the non-profit increase its number of volunteers and available resources

In early 2024, SCOPE8 initiated a high-impact pro bono collaboration with Litro de Luz, a non-profit organisation committed to bringing clean, affordable, and sustainable lighting to remote and underserved communities throughout Brazil. This initiative was firmly aligned with SCOPE8’s broader sustainability and social impact strategy — a reflection of its ongoing commitment to leveraging data and innovation in service of meaningful, real-world transformation.

The primary objective of the partnership was to support Litro de Luz in addressing one of its most pressing challenges: enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of its fundraising and partnership development processes. As an organisation that relies entirely on external funding — from volunteer mobilisation to equipment supply — Litro de Luz required a smarter, more scalable approach to identifying, qualifying, and engaging potential donors, partners, and collaborators.

Over the course of the year, SCOPE8’s team worked closely with Litro de Luz leadership — particularly with Tayane Belem, the NGO’s Marketing and Partnerships Director — to analyse and optimise their lead generation pipeline within Salesforce. The result of this close collaboration was the successful development of two advanced, automated Power BI tools: the Leads Thermometer and the Opportunities Map.

Phase 1: Building the Leads Thermometer

The first phase focused on streamlining Litro de Luz’s lead qualification process. The organisation had been receiving a high volume of inbound interest through various channels, but lacked a structured method to assess the quality and potential of these leads. Much of the decision-making process relied on informal criteria and individual judgement.

To solve this, SCOPE8 developed the Leads Thermometer — a live, automated dashboard that evaluates incoming leads based on demographic and behavioural data, historic conversion patterns, and type of engagement (financial, in-kind donations, or volunteer efforts). Leads are categorised and scored in real time, allowing the team to quickly identify "warm" prospects and prioritise outreach efforts accordingly.

This solution not only improved consistency and reduced manual workload but also introduced a data-driven foundation for strategic decision-making. The tool has already led to a 20% increase in lead conversion rates, directly enhancing Litro de Luz’s fundraising capacity and, by extension, its ability to serve more communities.

Phase 2: Mapping Opportunities for Greater Reach

Building on the success of the Leads Thermometer, SCOPE8 expanded the scope of the engagement to develop the Opportunities Map — a geographically enabled tool designed to visualise the ecosystem in which Litro de Luz operates. This second phase brought a new layer of strategic intelligence by plotting key actors and stakeholders across Brazil: supported communities, volunteers, suppliers, potential partners, and supporting infrastructure (such as airports and logistics hubs).

What initially began as a passive mapping tool evolved into a powerful outbound strategy enabler. By integrating data on surrounding businesses and organisations, the Opportunities Map now allows Litro de Luz to proactively approach potential partners in proximity to the communities they support. This transformation from passive to proactive engagement opens new opportunities for sponsorships, logistical support, and community activation.

While the technical development was complex — involving web scraping, data standardisation, and geographic data visualisation — the outcome far exceeded expectations. The tool strengthens Litro de Luz’s operational agility, broadens its funding base, and promotes a deeper sense of connection between urban centres and remote regions, contributing to greater community inclusion and awareness.

Delivering Measurable Impact

Together, the Leads Thermometer and the Opportunities Map form a robust digital infrastructure that enables Litro de Luz to scale its impact with intelligence and precision. The increased capital raised through more effective lead conversion directly translates into more lighting solutions implemented in underserved areas — enabling children to study at night, improving safety on unlit streets, and empowering communities with a resource as fundamental as electricity.

The partnership also set a precedent for innovation in the social sector, demonstrating how data-driven consulting can create systemic change. SCOPE8’s involvement was guided not only by technical expertise but also by its 3-Zero Quest philosophy: zero emissions, zero process waste, and zero complacency — principles fully aligned with Litro de Luz’s sustainable mission.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for Energy Security

The collaboration between SCOPE8 and Litro de Luz continues. A third phase of the project is already in the planning stages and aims to deliver even more critical infrastructure to remote communities: solar-powered refrigeration systems with energy storage system (BESS batteries). These solutions will enable families to safely store food and medicine — a significant advancement in both public health and food security. They will also allow for longer product shelf lives, opening up new economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

This next phase reflects the partnership’s continued evolution — from optimising operations to reshaping how entire communities access energy and opportunity.

Conclusion

The Litro de Luz partnership stands as a testament to the role that strategic consultancy can play in advancing sustainable development. By combining technology, data, and purpose, SCOPE8 helped not only improve operations — but expand what’s possible.

This is not just a project. It’s a movement towards a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainably powered future.
